Does Acupuncture Help with Scoliosis?
Back pain, muscle cramps, and shooting leg pain make living with scoliosis difficult. Fortunately, acupuncture offers an effective way to relieve pain and other scoliosis symptoms.
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis happens when the spine curves abnormally from side-to-side. Although you may associate scoliosis with children, the condition occurs in adults too.
The cause of scoliosis in children isn't always clear. MedlinePlus notes that scoliosis often happens for unknown reasons, but can also be related to abnormal formation of a baby's ribs or spine or certain diseases and conditions, including spinal bifida, polio, muscular dystrophy, or cerebral palsy.
Although mild cases of scoliosis can be overlooked in children, the condition may begin to cause negative symptoms in adulthood. It's also possible to develop scoliosis for the first time as an adult. The condition can develop after a back injury or car accident, or may occur if you have a degenerative spinal condition or disease, such as arthritis.
The Benefits of Treating Scoliosis with Acupuncture
Acupuncture can't cure scoliosis, but can improve your comfort. Acupuncture benefits include:
- Reduced Cobb Angle. Doctors use Cobb angle measurements to determine the severity of the spinal curve. A Cobb angle of 10 - 20 degrees is mild, 20 - 40 degrees moderate, and 40 degrees and above severe, according to a study published in Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine in 2019. Teenagers who received acupuncture and massage in a research study published in Frontiers in Medicine in 2025 had more improvement in Cobb Angle compared to teenagers who wore braces and received posture training.
- Less Pain. Acupuncture treatments offer a natural way to manage scoliosis pain. Acupuncturists use hair-thin needles designed to balance Qi flow throughout the body. Qi is a vital life force that reaches every part of the body through a system of meridians. A blockage in a meridian disrupts the flow of Qi and may cause or worsen pain and other symptoms. Acupuncture treatments eliminate blockages and spur your body to release endorphins and serotonin, hormones that have a positive effect on pain and moods. Acupuncture may also improve the way your brain reacts to pain.
- Stronger Core Muscles. The muscles in your core (abdomen, back and pelvis) stabilize and support your back and are essential for good posture. Scoliosis can cause muscle imbalances that weaken core muscles, worsening pain and other symptoms. Due to imbalances, some muscles may become too tight or too weak. Acupuncture relaxes tight muscles, reduces cramps, improves balance and flexibility, and makes it easier to strengthen core muscles with exercise.
- Decreased Inflammation. The abnormal curvature of your spine can press on nerves, causing irritation that triggers inflammation. Acupuncture relieves inflammation naturally by preventing the release of cytokines, proteins that cause inflammation.
- Better Sleep. Your sleep issues could be related to scoliosis. Researchers studying sleep problems in participants aged 10 - 19 with scoliosis determined that patients with poor sleep quality were more likely to have higher total pain scores and less ability to twist the lower back. Their research appeared in Sleep Science in 2022. Acupuncture relieves many of the painful symptoms associated with scoliosis, including back pain, stiffness and cramps. Endorphins and serotonin released during treatments reduce stress and promote relaxation, ensuring that you drift off to sleep without tossing and turning.
